Fano Jazz By The Sea, 1997

The 1997 edition of the festival opens with a special project in exclusive European, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Art Ensemble of Chicago. The same Art Ensemble of Chicago, on the stage of the Malatesta Court, meets the Big Band The Chicago Jazz Ensemble conducted by Bill Russo, historical arranger of the Stan Kenton orchestra.

The festival, in the 1997 edition, lasts 7 days. Peculiarities of Fano Jazz By The Sea 1997 is the collaboration with two other Italian festivals: Pomigliano Jazz (Campania) and On the borders between Sardinia and Jazz (Sardinia). The purpose of the collaboration is the creation of a network aimed at encouraging the development of jazz made in Italy. We also find some collateral activities, including a photographic exhibition on the musicians of previous editions of the festival.

Also noteworthy is the new location of the Rocca Malatestiana, which will be one of the symbolic places of the festival over the years.

Fano Jazz By The Sea, 1998

The 1998 edition is undoubtedly definable as historical. It is in fact a jazz concert to inaugurate the musical season of the restored Teatro della Fortuna in Fano, with a performance by Chick Corea. The association between jazz and Fano culture is also reiterated by a prestigious performance by Gary Burton and the Astor Piazzolla Reunion Band, always in the splendid location of the Teatro della Fortuna.

Reduced to 6 days, the ’98 festival is equally uniform and of the highest level under the artistic profile. In addition to Burton and Korea, there will be performers such as Charles Lloyd, Lester Bowie, Brass Fantasy, Dave Holland, Roy Haynes, all stars of world jazz. The representation of Italian jazz at Fano Jazz By The Sea 1998 is entrusted to historical formations such as The Noisemakers, Aires Tango, Méta Quartet, all coming from the Via Veneto label, admitted exclusively to the festival for the synergic development of the production activity musical aimed at Italian musicians.

Il festival 1998 è ormai una realtà consolidata

Fano Jazz By The Sea, 1999

With the ’99 edition the festival is still reduced, from 6 in 1998 to 4 days, but remaining extremely strong in the musical proposal: Dee Dee Bridgewater, Martial Solal, Steps Ahead, Carla Bley, Steve Coleman are the main protagonists of a festival that has left its mark, with absolute novelties such as the trio of the Australian pianist Joe Chindamo. The musicologist Franco Fayenz writes about this edition: “It was all jazz festivals, they would be joy for the ears and the eyes …”. And speaking of the performance of Martial Solal: “Fano Jazz touches a summit that will remain long in the memory of the lucky spectators”.

1999 is the record edition, with the highest percentage of available seats and occupied posts (96%), and with the largest collections.

The collateral activities include a photography workshop held by photographer Pino Ninfa, with the participation of professional and non-professional photographers from all over Italy.

Fano Jazz By The Sea continues in the new millennium. The 2000 edition sees the festival move and reduce its locations more and more, to give continuity to the various performances, in search of a stable place to be held. So it will be passed only to Anfietatro Rastatt and Corte Malatestiana, where will perform the likes of Michel Camilo and Herbie Hancock.
