Consueta, festive closing, Sunday, July 30, on the meadows of the Golena del Furlo di Acqualagna, with the spectacular Gangbe Brass Band of Benin. In the middle, from Saturday 22nd to Saturday 29th July, the Rocca Malatestiana of Fano, returned to the City after a precious restoration and safety work, thanks to the efforts of the Administration, will be the Main Stage of Fano Jazz By The Sea 2017, which on the occasion of its XXV edition arrives, therefore, in a location so prestigious and full of history. Inside the same Rocca, the Young Stage will be set up in the Rocchetta, while the Jazz Village will be located outside of it, a true point of union between the City and the Festival.
Fano Jazz By The Sea cuts the very important milestone of 25 years of life on the driving force of the innate passion for great music, shared with a loyal audience, always careful to catch the news of a constantly evolving Festival, faithful mirror of the many souls that today cohabit in the world of jazz.
The Festival, this year registered to Marco Maggioli, who at Fano threw the seed of jazz, then collected from what has long been recognized as one of the most important national summer musical events, is organized by Fano Jazz Network in collaboration with ‘Department of Culture of the City of Fano, with the Artistic Direction of Adriano Pedini, with the contribution of the Ministry of Cultural Activities MIBACT and the support of other regional institutions and sponsors.
Main Stage, Exodus Stage, Young Stage, Jazz Village, Jazz In Wave: Fano Jazz By The Sea 2017 is divided into several sections, ideally, and not only, communicating with each other, which together will offer a wide range of proposals, thanks to the involvement of numerous cultural and associative realities.
Main Stage – Fano Jazz by the Sea 2017
Saturday 22 July, after more than twenty years since the last Fano Jazz concert By The Sea, the Malatesta Fortress will reopen its doors to musical events: special guest of the inaugural evening, the famous English pianist and composer Michael Nyman, engaged in a solo piano during which he will offer a list of the melodies for the cinema that have made him famous everywhere. The concert by Michael Nyman will have a further meaning: part of the collections will be donated to the people of the Marche region affected by the recent earthquake.
In the following evenings, the spotlight will then be on the renowned American guitarist John Scofield, a favorite of Fano Jazz By The Sea, who will listen to his Uberjam Band (23 July); on the supertrio formed by the Indian percussionist Trilok Gurtu, by Paolo Fresu, another name always well received by the Fanese public, and by the Cuban pianist Omar Sosa (24 July); on the British singer and multi-instrumentalist Jacob Collier, new star of the world jazz and fresh winner of two Grammy Awards (25 July); on the Bokantè, an intriguing multi-ethnic group born from a rib of the now very popular Snarky Puppy (26 July); on the refined pianist of Armenian origin Tigran Hamasyan (27 July); on the remarkable quartet winner of the “Top Jazz 2016” of the monthly Musica Jazz for the best Italian album of the year, consisting of the pianist Giovanni Guidi, trombonist Gianluca Petrella, the French clarinetist Louis Sclavis and the Portuguese drummer Joao Lobo (28 July). Finally, on July 29, the return to Fano, after many years, of the Spanish pianist Chano Dominguez, creator of an exciting mix of jazz and flamenco.
Also inside the Rocca Malatestiana, in the Rocchetta, will find hospitality, from 23 to 29 July at 23, young talents, some of which are already known to the national public, side by side with others in the process of affirmation. We start with some Marches formations: the Butterfly trio, with Bruno Marinucci on guitar, Pierpaolo Ranieri on bass, synth and electronic drums and Marco Rovinelli on drums (23rd July); the quintet of the bassist Filippo Macchiarelli (24th July); MACKs with their mix of hip hop, neo soul, jazz and electronics (25 July). Following two leading names of the new jazz (but not only) Italian: the versatile singer, pianist and performer Debora Petrina (26 July) and the trombonist Filippo Vignato, best new Italian talent in the “Top Jazz 2016” that will perform in trio with the French pianist Yannick Lestra and with the Hungarian drummer Attila Gyarfas (27 July). And again: the Pericopes, born from the path undertaken by Alessandro Sgobbio (piano) and Emiliano Vernizzi (sax) and the result of ten years of international artistic activity between Paris, New York and Italy; the group of pianist Maria Chiara Argirò, Roman by birth but London by adoption, author and interpreter of a music that combines stylistic suggestions from jazz, classical music, popular traditions and rock.
Appreciated novelty of the 2016 edition of Fano Jazz By The Sea, the section “Exodus Stage: The echoes of migration” offers the opportunity to reflect on one of the crucial problems of Western society, as well as listen to musicians of international caliber enveloped by the magnificent frame of the San Domenico Art Gallery. In this other magical location, in the afternoons from 24 to 29 July (18.30), there will be only six performances, starting with that of Jabel Kanuteh (kora and voice), whose migrant story is emblematic: Jabel la tells through a music of great evocative power.
As it is that of the Apulian saxophonist Roberto Ottaviano, one of the greatest international specialists of the soprano sax (July 25).
Then it will be the turn of accordionist Simone Zanchini, innovator of the technical-expressive possibilities of his instrument (26th July); of the Sardinian guitarist Paolo Angeli, inventor of an original version of the Sardinian guitar (27 July); of the trumpeter Giovanni Falzone, a whimsical soloist able to combine jazz with classical music and rock (28th July); of the drummer Roberto Dani, whose concert for prepared drums promises to be a sound reflection starting from silence.
The Jazz Village, with the Green Jazz project, is the other great novelty of Fano Jazz By The Sea 2017. Not just a space dedicated to collateral activities, but much more: if the Rocca Malatestiana will be the exclusive venue for big concerts, the Jazz Village, set up just outside the same Rocca, will be the beating heart of the Festival, the point of union with the whole city. The Jazz Village activity will start every day at 6.30 pm, to continue until after the Main Stage concerts. Here there will be concerts – aperitif at 7.30pm, midnight appointments, DJ sets included, educational workshops for children, meetings and more. And here they will host the food and wine stand, the info point and the Green Corner, a place of representation of the idea of Sustainable Festival, fully married by Fano Jazz By The Sea.
The inauguration of the Jazz Village is scheduled for Saturday, July 22 (19 hours) with the Mondaino Young Orchestra.
Fano Jazz By The Sea has always set itself the goal, as is natural, to be linked to the tourist vocation of the City. For this reason, starting from this edition, Fano Jazz By The Sea 2017 avails itself of Tuquitour, an incaming agency that will propose 10 “experiential” tour packages linked to the Festival.
One of these is the Jazz In Wave, an initiative that has been organized for some years. Two scheduled excursions on board the Gulet Regina Isabella: Wednesday, July 25 with the pianist Enrico Zanisi and Friday 28 with the group Welcome To The Jungle. Departure at 6 pm from the Port of Fano – Marina dei Cesari towards Colle dell’Ardizio. Return at 11pm. Info and reservations: tel. 0721 805629.
